THE FRIENDS OF SAN FRANCISCO PSYCHOANALYTIC INSTITUTE 2002 ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM
We are pleased to invite you to attend the 2002 Annual Symposium:
Adolescence, Violence, and
Fanaticism: Peace or Pieces_
Saturday, May 11
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
California Pacific Medical Center, Pacific Campus Conference Center
Psychoanalytic thinkers have drawn our
attention to the violence, in fantasy if not in deed, inherent in the process
of growing up. Recent events of actual violence cause us to ask questions about
the roots of violence and its ramifications. Can adolescent violence be attributed
to failures of the integrity of our social fabric_ Are there parallels between
the mentality behind the terrorist events of September 11 and a possible tendency
of adolescents toward fanaticism_ Is it possible to talk about "adolescent
violence" without fostering dangerous and misleading stereotypes_ How might
we understand popular fascination with sensationalized accounts of adolescent
violence_
In this multidisciplinary symposium, we will address these and other questions.
Our panel discussion will feature representatives from psychoanalysis, adolescent
mental health, law/advocacy, the school system, the media, and sociology, political
science, and related academic disciplines. 3.5 hours of CE/CME credit will be
offered.
