This course for administrators and head teachers offered in a small group setting is a unique opportunity to collect, digest and manipulate information that is already confronting childcare professionals on a daily basis.
The quality of the world in which we and our children live depends upon the quality of the child care we provide. Since the majority of children in this country are estimated to be in childcare before the age of six years, current and future generations will be taken care of in groups by adults other than their parents. It is critically important that those individuals willing and eager to take on the caretaking task be supported and educated. They must be given the opportunity to gain self-respect by forming a professional viewpoint and learning to competently use the data they obtain on a day-to-day working basis.
This course will serve to enhance your observational and assessment skills. It will provide you with the latest research on child development and a psychological framework for understanding behavior. Topic areas to be covered are as follows: Child Development; Observing, Assessing, and Understanding the Difficult Child; Mental Health Consultation; Communication Among Staff and with Families; Crisis Intervention and On-site Therapeutic Modalities. Other topics include trauma, abuse, anxiety in childhood, attention deficit disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and on-site therapeutic modalities as they relate to childcare.
Through arrangements with San Francisco State
University’s College of Extended Learning (which is responsible for all self
support instructional programs of the university) 2 units of academic degree
credit may be earned.
Thank you for your interest.
