The San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Society is pleased to offer a new Continuing Education workshop series designed to meet the requirements of the Boards of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences for licensing and license-renewal. This program will have a distinct psychoanalytic emphasis and will be taught by distinguished experts in their respective areas. All members of the clinical community are invited to participate in this new, unique educational opportunity.
LAW AND ETHICS: A Psychodynamic Perspective
Workshops on law and ethics provide opportunities to clarify ambiguities in
the law and to be reminded of the central place of ethics in our profession.
Unfortunately, though, they often emphasize risk management at the expense of
clinical considerations and thereby present a stark choice between practicing
safely and focusing on the best interests of the patient. This course, by contrast,
seeks an integration of law, ethics, and psychoanalytic practice, in the context
of clinical integrity and responsibility. Conflicts between professional expertise,
law, and risk management are explored, not dismissed in favor of conventional
wisdom about the safest course of action. The psychodynamic clinician is faced
with particular dilemmas in the legal and regulatory arena. Issues of confidentiality,
informed consent, clinical emergencies, record keeping, and more, confront the
psychodynamic and psychoanalytic clinician in unique ways. In this workshop,
these dilemmas and ways of handling them are presented and discussed.

SUPERVISION
In the morning session Dr. Sarnat will present a comparative
overview of the full range of psychoanalytic models of supervision and will
focus in on a relational approach. Ethical issues for supervisors, the nature
of the supervisor's authority and the teach/treat boundary of the supervisory
relationship will be considered. The morning session will end with an exploration
of a transcript of a supervisory hour.
In the afternoon session Dr. Bronstein will continue the discussion of the supervisory
relationship and supervision models. A two hour clinical case presentation will
be used to highlight the supervision process from the vantage point of what
we as supervisors and clinicians do in this process. Dr. Bronstein will be supervising
the case informed by a contemporary Kleinian and Bionian viewpoint. Dr. Sarnat
will facilitate this discussion, commenting on the supervisory process as it
unfolds.
