Michael Parsons is one of the current leading voices of the British Independent Tradition. His work highlights the inherent tension between intuitive aspects of psychoanalysis on the one hand, which are deeply personal and subjective, and on the other hand the need for objective theory and systematic principles of technique. He emphasizes that the analytic relationship is not simply a vehicle for transference and interpretation. Independent analysts have worked to articulate a framework that can infuse ordinary human interaction with psychoanalytic awareness.

Dr. Parsons is particularly interested in the role of imagination, play and creativity. He sees free association as valuable not only because it reveals unconscious mental content, but also because it is an imaginative activity in its own right. To help somebody become less anxious about controlling the internal mobility of their thoughts and feelings, is itself to facilitate their psychic growth and development.

Dr. Parsons is a Training and Supervising Analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society. He has authored numerous papers, and a book entitled The Dove that Returns, The Dove that Vanishes: Paradox and Creativity in Psychoanalysis, published in 2000. He has been in?uenced by the work of Marion Milner and Enid Balint, and has co-edited a collection of Enid Balint's papers, entitled Before I was I: Psychoanalysis and the Imagination. Dr. Parsons came to psychoanalysis through medicine and psychiatry. Before his medical training he studied classics and philosophy. All these disciplines have in?uenced his thinking and writing.

We will be fortunate to hear Dr. Parsons present a recently written paper entitled "An Independent Theory of Clinical Technique." The paper examines the intellectual and human values that underlie the Independent Tradition, and the implications of these ideals for clinical work. Dr. Jed Sekoff will discuss these ideas with Dr. Parsons, as well as their place within the overall development of his thinking. Next, we will hear and discuss a case presentation of an analysis of an adult by Dr. Erin Mullin.

Dr. Parson's program continues the focus of previous programs with Ron Britton, Edna O'Shaughnessy, Michael Feldman, Dale Boesky, John Steiner, Roy Schafer, Elizabeth Bott Spillius, Harold Stewart, Joseph and Anne-Marie Sandler, Betty Joseph, Hanna Segal and Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel, which have used detailed clinical material of ongoing psychoanalytic treatments.
