Ken Corbett is a fresh and unique voice in the current dialogues regarding gender, sexuality and non-traditional families. Regarding masculinity, he sees the wish and effort to be big and a winner, not a small loser, as a central boyhood trope. He comments on a cultural attitude of "boys will be boys," which leaves boys disengaged and on their own with their phallic narcissistic preoccupations (bigness and winning), as well as the anxiety and splitting that results from the disowning of smallness, weakness and passivity. Boys' narcissistic preoccupations and aggression are seen as simultaneously prized and neglected in our culture.

Dr. Corbett is the Editor of Studies in Gender and Sexuality, and an Associate Editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues. He is a member of the Psychoanalytic Society of the Post-doctoral Program at New York University. Dr. Corbett is in the private practice of psychoanalysis with adults and children in New York City. Dr. Corbett has published numerous papers, but some of the most influential are: "Nontraditional Family Romance," in the Psychoanalytic Quarterly,43(3) in 2001; "More Life: Centrality and Marginality in Human Development," in Psychoanalytic Dialogues, 11(3), in 2001; and "Faggot=Loser," in Studies in Gender and Sexuality, 2(1), in 2001.

Judith Butler is an internationally respected thinker on the topics of feminist and queer theory, philosophy and psychoanalysis. She has been highly influential in the reconsideration of gender -- she describes the experience of the body as a gendered phenomenon as largely a function of social, political and institutional forces.

Dr. Butler is Maxine Elliot Professor in the Departments of Rhetoric, Comparative Literature, and Women's Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She has authored several books, including Antigone's Claim: Kinship Between Life and Death in 2000; Gender Trouble : Feminism and the Subversion of Identity in 1990; and Bodies That Matter: On the Discursive Limits of "Sex" in 1993. She has also just published in 2004 a collection of writings on war's impact on language and thought entitled Precarious Life: Powers of Violence and Mourning.

We will be fortunate to hear Dr. Corbett present a recently written paper entitled "Boy Hoods: Masculinity as Pleasure and Defense." The paper examines phallic narcissism, phallic aggression, and the tipping points between pleasure and violence. Dr. Butler will discuss these ideas with Dr. Corbett. Next, we will hear three case vignettes of boys and men in therapy or analysis presented to Drs. Corbett and Butler.

Our two organizations have come together in a spirit of collaboration to present this conference. This program continues the focus of previous programs with Michael Parsons, Ron Britton, Edna O'Shaughnessy, Michael Feldman, Dale Boesky, John Steiner, Roy Schafer, Elizabeth Bott Spillius, Harold Stewart, Joseph and Anne-Marie Sandler, Betty Joseph, Hanna Segal and Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel, which have used detailed clinical material of ongoing psychoanalytic treatments.

NOTE: On Wednesday, February 2, 2005, from 7:30 - 9:00 pm, Gary Grossman, Ph.D. will lead a discussion of recent articles by Dr. Corbett in the SFPI&S Library. Members of the professional community who wish to attend should call to reserve space and to request information about the articles.
