This course is designed for therapists interested in exploring
the basic concepts of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Its goals are to sharpen
practical clinical skills and to aid in translating theoretical training into
actions that are helpful to patients.
The Clinical Theory portion of the course is divided into three parts. The first,
Beginning Treatment, aims at helping the therapist intervene usefully in the
initial sessions of a psychotherapy. The second, Conducting Treatment, will
emphasize key concepts for organizing interventions as a treatment unfolds.
The third, Conceptualizing Treatment, will take up the question of how treatment
works, drawing on examples from diverse viewpoints. In each of the Clinical
Theory seminars, participants will be encouraged to present treatment vignettes.
The Case Conference portion of the course is given in conjunction with the Clinical
Theory seminars and provides further opportunity to apply these ideas to treatments
in progress.
This course is intended for therapists in training or in practice who wish to consolidate and expand upon the psychoanalytic portions of their experience. Participants will become part of a working group, not to exceed fifteen members. This limit reflects a belief in the unique importance of small working groups for continuing professional development.
30 Sessions; 45 CME credits, $800; readers' cost not
included in tuition; for refund policies, see registration.
Location: San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Society, 2420 Sutter Street,
San Francisco.
Clinical Theory Seminars:
BEGINNING TREATMENT
Terrence Becker, M.D.
Wednesdays, 12:00 -1:15 pm
January 5 - February 9, 2005
This seminar will consider how we go about trying to understand our patients
in the initial sessions. We will explore the kinds of data we use in making
hypotheses about a patient's characteristic difficulties, with attention given
to transference and countertransference. We will discuss how and when we talk
with patients about the nature of their difficulties and the goals of treatment.
Readings will address clinical formulation as well as approaches to issues of
transference in early sessions.
CONDUCTING TREATMENT
J. Samuel Chase, M.D.
Wednesdays, 12:00 - 1:15 pm
February 16 - March 23, 2005
This seminar covers htmlects of technique in psychoanalytic psychotherapy that
become important as treatment unfolds. We will consider the activity of both
the patient and the therapist, and how we observe and understand the impact
of interventions. We will discuss transference reactions, resistance, unconscious
fantasy, and working through, as well as countertransference reactions and enactments.
CONCEPTUALIZING TREATMENT
Elizabeth M. Simpson, LSCW
Wednesdays, 12-1:15 pm
March 30- May 4, 2005
In this seminar, we will consider the nature of therapeutic action - how do
we conceptualize psychotherapy and what are our ideas about how people change
in treatment. Using clinical writings drawn from various schools of thought,
we will focus on the implication of various theories for our technique. There
will also be attention to how technique may shift depending upon the patient-therapist
dyad.
Case Conferences:
Wednesdays, 1:30 - 2:45 pm
Stanley Steinberg, M.D.
January 5- March 2, 2005
Chuck Fisher, M.D.
March 9 - May 4, 2005
The case conferences provide an opportunity to apply ideas developed in the Clinical Theory Courses to therapies conducted by the participants. All cases for study will be selected from the participant's ongoing patient treatments. Dr. Steinberg's Case Conference will emphasize the initial hours of treatment, and Dr. Fisher's Case Conference will focus on later stages in treatment.
